Patient Food and Nutrition Services

Nutrition is an important part of your patient’s care while he or she is in the hospital. Diet orders are written by the physician. The physician’s order must be transcribed to the Daily Diet Requisition (DDR) for communication to the Diet Office. The DDR should be updated regularly and sent to the Diet Office before each meal by the times listed on the DDR form. Once a diet order (e.g. regular, renal, diabetic) is communicated to the Diet Office, meal trays designed to meet the patient’s specific needs will be provided. Please let us know if the patient has any food allergies or food intolerances as well as any foods the patient particularly dislikes. Patients under one year old will not receive meal trays as baby foods are readily available in the floor pantry.

A menu for the following day’s meals will be sent on the breakfast tray. Please request the patients to mark their preferences before 10am if possible and leave the menu in the room. A food service assistant will collect the menus. If you have any questions about your patient’s meals or if the patient has any special requests, please ask your dietetic technician or call the diet office at 353-1345. The dietetic technician can answer any questions you have about available foods.

If someone wants to bring to a patient food from home or from a restaurant, please first talk with the doctor or dietitian to make sure that these foods are approved for the patient’s specific diet and condition. Foods from outside the hospital must be properly prepared, stored and labeled. See Administrative Policy 6.06.10 for details. For safety and protection, patients may leave their hospital floor to go to the cafeteria only if accompanied by a staff member from the nursing unit.
